University
of Portsmouth
The University is now at the forefront of
a rapidly changing, thriving city, with
a modern diverse campus, taking pride in
its reputation among students for the friendliness
and approachability of its staff, and for
the provision of a well structured and supportive
learning environment.
Portsmouth is an island city situated on
the coast of Southern England and because
of its sheltered position, the weather is
mild compared to other parts of England.
London is just 80 minutes away by train
and there are good road and rail communications
to London, Heathrow and Gatwick airports,
the Midlands and the rest of the South.
Portsmouth is the gateway to Europe with
daily car and passenger ferries crossing
to France and Spain and the many yachts
and pleasure crafts reflect the Solent's
reputation as one of the world's most popular
sailing venues. There are many opportunities
for students to learn this skill! The city
is a lively, young, student orientated place
with opportunities to chill out, meet new
people and experience an atmosphere that
can never be duplicated
The Higher Education Funding Council for
England (HEFCE) awarded the university Centre
for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
status in two key areas of work.
The award winning areas, which benefit from
£9m extra funding, are foundation degree
provision ('Foundation Direct') and professional
development in the health-related sciences
(the 'ExPERT Centre')
Most of our first year students
choose to live in halls of residence and
we have some great locations for you to
choose from. You can opt for either catered
or self-catered accommodation and most rooms
and flats are equipped with en-suite facilities
and voice and data links allowing Internet
access. If you like the hustle and bustle
of city life, we offer modern, purpose-built
halls in the heart of town, with the main
University campus, the Students' Union,
sports facilities, main shopping areas and
nightlife right on the doorstep.
